    Curriculum overview

What this programme is — in plain English.

Pearson Edexcel International A Level (IAL) is a fully modular Year 12 / Year 13 pre-university qualification taught in over 90 countries. It is the qualification of choice in many British international schools across Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

IAL runs in January, May / June and (in some subjects) October series, giving students multiple opportunities to bank units and re-sit individual modules without restarting an entire subject — a clear structural difference from the now-linear UK domestic A Level.

Edexcel IAL is recognised by every UK Russell Group university, Ivy League institution and major Australian, Canadian and Middle Eastern university. Our Edexcel A Level tuition is delivered live, one-to-one, by Pearson-trained subject specialists.

    Assessment structure

    • Modular unit structure

Each Edexcel IAL subject splits into 4–6 units. Students bank unit grades as they go, with full A Level grades calculated from total UMS marks.

    • Three exam series per year

January, May / June and October series. This is the single biggest structural advantage of IAL — genuine unit-by-unit re-sit flexibility.

    • AS / A2 staging

Edexcel IAL is delivered as IAS (Year 12) and IA2 (Year 13). IAS units count 50% toward the full A Level grade.

    Grading system

    • A*–E grade scale

Edexcel IAL grades A* (highest) to E. A grade U (ungraded) is below E. A* is awarded based on A2 unit performance only.

    • UMS (Uniform Mark Scale) banking

Each unit converts to UMS, and final grades come from total UMS across all units — a feature that allows precise grade engineering.

    • UCAS tariff

      A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32. UK universities typically quote A Level grades directly in their offers.

    Examination format

    • Structured calculation / data-response papers

Sciences, Maths and Economics use structured calculation and data-response papers per unit.

    • Essay-based humanities

English Literature and Psychology are essay-heavy and reward planning discipline.

    • No school-based practical for Sciences

Edexcel IAL Sciences assess practical skills via written units, not invigilated lab work.

    Study challenges

    Where students actually struggle.

These are the recurring patterns we see across hundreds of Edexcel A Level students every year, drawn from real diagnostics rather than marketing claims.

    Unit-load management

With 12+ unit exams across two years, students can easily under-rotate revision and leave AS units cold by the time A2 mocks arrive.

    Re-sit decisions

Knowing whether to re-sit IAS Unit 2 vs focusing on IA2 Unit 4 is a UMS-arithmetic decision most students cannot make alone.

    Predicted-grade pressure

UCAS predicted grades are drawn from Year 12 IAS results — making the January and June Y12 series unusually high-stakes.

    Subject combination

The same combination mistakes that hurt Cambridge A Level students (dropping Further Maths for Engineering, skipping Biology for Medicine) apply equally to IAL.
